Default relief pattern help

I happened upon the Fall 2003 issue of WCI, front cover shows a relief carved fisherman....in the magazine there is a pattern of the face, but no eye template.....went to website and lo and behold they had the eye pattern template as a download pdf....well I have down loaded it, and everytime I print, even if I reduce the size, the eye is as big as the pattern's head....has anyone happened to have done this and has the eye template they would share?.....I assume because it is in a PDF file, I can make any changes to it, it shows the pattern reduced, but it sure don't print it reduced....any help is greatly appreciated.....Dennis

The only thing I can possibly tell you is to go ahead and print a copy and then take it to a place like Kinko's and have it rduced for the size you need. That or look at the template and draw it on your wood. Hope this helps.

Dennis, If the pdf file has been locked by it's creator I don't think you can make any changes to it. You might either email the original author about this problem or check over at Adobe to see if they have a help section.

There is an old fashioned method of reducing a pattern that takes just a little time but has great results.

Print a copy of your face pattern and one of the eye pattern. Mark a simple grid work over the face pattern - the number of grids per inch really depends on how large your face pattern is. For an 8" x 11" pattern I would probably use 4 squares to the inch, maybe five. Count how many squares on the grid your eyes should be.

Now ... As a general rule of thumb, if your eyes are looking straight at you, the center of the eye pupil should be on a vertical line with the outer corners of the mouth. So by measuring the width of the mouth line you know how wide your eyes should be measured from the middle of one pupil to the other.

Here's our page on how the face lays out.

Wood Spirits General Instructions - Drawing the Face

Mark a grid over the eye pattern to have the same number of grid squares as you need to fill in the face pattern. If your mouth measurement has six squares then divide and mark the pupil to pupil area into six squares. Using that same grid square mark the grid to include the outer edges of the eye.

Now ... on your face pattern where the eyes should go draw the lines you see inside of each grid square on your eye pattern. Don't draw the eyes ... just draw what you see in just one square. As you fill the squares you will have drawn the eyes ...

Here's our page on transfering patterns using grid work.

On page 49 of that issue to the left of the main pattern is the pattern for the eye. It should print out with the pattern.

try bringing up the picture in your PDF file... put it in 'fit screen' size... use the print screen option on your 'puter... now open ms paint and under edit hit paste... now orient the picture so you can see the whole part of the eye that you want... cut the picture from the rest... open a new file and paste the picture there... now save it as a jpeg file... now you can bring the picture up in ms word program... and adjust it accordingly.. then print... hope this helps
