Having done a fair amount of relief carving I know what it takes to achieve a nice piece. You have done well, I know why you have saved the wheel and tire detail for last, it is most difficult. Perhaps you cold use Susan's tip here also, only substitute a washer of the right size in place of the ruler and follow it around moving the whole piece as you go. Good luck.

Awsome carving.
When I do relief in black walnut I only wax it to a very high polish using my drill and polish wheel starting with tripoli then finishing with bre-wax clear. Regardless of texture.

Here's the finished carving. I put gloss varnish on the car itself, and then a thin coat of wax.
