Sometime, somewhere in the past couple of weeks I was looking through back issues of my carving magazines. While doing so I came across either plans or a good picture of a tilting, table top stand for holding a board while doing a relief carving. EDIT: it may have been someone's picture posted on this forum. Now I want to make one but can't find the magazine. Does anyone know where I have seen this stand? It had a knob on the side to loosen the top allowing it to tilt and it appeared to be made from plywood. Any help will be appreciated. |

Close but no cigar. But thanks for the link. The stand I'm looking for actually sat on top of a table. But the one you linked me to brought up another desire. I'm looking for what "Just Carving" made the rotater knuckle out of. Maybe he/she will see this post and chime in. If not I'll have to PM him/her. So, how are you doing. Good to have seen you. Nice to be able to put actual people to posts. |

HEY!!! NOBODY CALLS ME A HE/SHE AND GETS AWAY WITH IT!!!! Put 'em up ! Put 'em up! Updated with correct dimensions! I used two 1 1/2" dia. pipe flanges and a 1 7/8" trailer ball hitch. Drilled out the holes in the flanges to receive 5/16" bolts, wingnuts and washers. Mounted a 1/2" dia. flange on the trailer ball threaded end. The sketch of the stand is too large to put on line here. If I resize it, it becomes illegible. PM me an e-mail, and I'll send it too you. I also notched out part--about an inch--of the 1 1/2" dia. flange so when the bolts are tightened, it clamps tighter around the ball and doesn't slip. Ron, uses an easel type stand. Also Chris Pye shows one on his site. If this is what you mean. Ash |

Here are some examples of what I use. The one in the first two is 24 X24 and will hole a piece 30X48. It is angled about 15 degrees The second one (3rd) picture is the same size and the only difference is one has vertical clampling and one has horizontal clamping. The last wo pictures is the one that I use for smaller carvings under 20" Hope this helps and gives you some ideas. Ron

Bob, Vic, Ron, thanks. Good ideas all. I'm going to take a bit from everything and come up with what will work for me. Thanks for the research and time. And more ideas are welcome. |

I revised my first post, i.e. correct sizes. Here's the original source for the ball hitch swivel: Carvin Vise Tips Thanks again Dave. |

Hi Steve. My wife and I enjoyed meeting you and going to our first show. There are some awesome carvers out there! It looks like you could almost lash a pair of pipe clamps to a piece of plywood, then add the swivel for your work surface. Vic
