I'm so used to chip carving that when I do stop cuts on a relief carving I use my chip carving knife.

I use gouges to make the stop cuts. The gouge matches the curve of the cut.

For straight stop cuts I use a chip carving knife. For curved stop cuts I use a gouge with a sweep that matches the curve.

Thank you very much I'll get a chip knife. I have some gouge to work with. Again thank you. Hopefully this will help me a lot with my relief carving. Tony

I also find a chip knife easy to control for stop cuts.
