Low relief, same as bass (pronounced base) relief is what you would see on gun stocks, and is what most relief carving done today is. It is basically a drawing outlined in cuts and rellies heavilly on perspective to give depth to the piece.

High relief is almost a carving in the round, placed on a board. It still relies on perspective, but has elements that are heavilly separated from the background, like 3D figures that may be attached from the backside or actually standing out from the background.

Just where the distinction between the two develops is up for debate I think, but maybe an art student would have a definitive answer, here. Art students??

Hi Iam Bob, New to this forum as of today. I live in southern michigan. Been a woodworker for years, just got intrested in carving bout 2 yrs ago, started dabbaling in it at times. But as years go on finding I need to broaden my skills and have more to be able to do after retirement, so decide to self teach myself carving. Doing alot reading of books and magazines. I subcribe to woodcarving illustrated, chip chat, and Iam also a member of National Woodcarvers Assoc.. I also belong to woodworkers talk.com, forum, Lumberjocks.com forum. They are very good and alot of good people willing to help in both of those forums. So Iam sure there are good members here that will offer good advice too. I enjoy chating and reading the forums that are posted. And we all at times have questions about projects that we get stuck on. Also love fishing , and bowling. So if Iam not in the shop Iam doing one of the other two. I work for Home Depot, Loss Prevention for past 5 yrs, before that was a toolmaker for 27 yrs.

Welcome to the forum musclecar! Relief carving is quite a lot of fun. I have only done one relief carving piece, but plan to do more. I moved from Dearborn to Oregon about 2.5 years ago. It is always good to touch base with some Michigan folk.
