Default Recipe Box

Finally finished the recipe box for my daughter.
I salvaged the walnut from a very old source that was headed for the trash heap.
It has a Danish oil finish on it.
The colors are brighter in the photos than they are on the hoof.

All in all, I am pretty pleased with it.

The box is beautiful. I love wild roses and your carvings capture their delicate nature perfectly.

Kate, that is lovely. I was hoping you would post pictures of it after you finished it. Is this your design comletely? or did you use patterns for influence?
The balance of carvings on the box seem perfect.
Thanks for showing us.

Hey Christina

For the patterns I searched through about seven million bits of clip art and then photochopped them to suit my needs.
Clipart works great for patterns when you are looking for something kind of specific.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I know my daughter will enjoy it a long long time. She's sentimental about those kinds of things. I thought I would put a few old family recipes in it to get her started.

K.

Just beautiful! Love the subtle color - works very well with the stain!

Thank you rales, it's actually not stained.
The wood (walnut) dates back to the early 1900's. I think it has just aged to perfection. All it has on it is a clear danish oil finish. It was horribly, terribly dry. Wanted to chip no matter how I turned my knives, thus the rough texture on it.

I have another piece that I carved and left in a drawer for about a year that the wood began to peel up on part of the carving.

The sad part is, I am almost out of that wood. Now to find something else to make boxes out of that I can carve and that will be pretty

It's so beautiful! Love that you saved the wood also.it's so full of love! Maybe you can find old dressers or something at yard sales to reuse for future projects.
