the ceramic stones that Dennis Moor sells are very well ssuited for chip carving knives. You're trying to minimize the compression of the wood fibers when you chip carve, so you want a very light angle and no rounding of the cutting edge. The ceramic stones will get you where you need to be. Be careful how you strop a chip carving knife; a regular leather strop can start to round the edge pretty quickly. The 8000 grit ceramic stones should give you the finish you need without stropping. Mike

uuuuhhhh yeah i usually just strop every 5 minutes but as you see in mi sig i am lazy and i almost never use mi stomes i just ahve my strop and it is rubbed with veritas honing compund(its green)

I'm trying out chip carving for the first time.
If I decided to try sharpening "flat" at 0 degrees, is it best to use a "shaping" stone to knock off the 10-degree shoulder for the first time, or just go for it with a finer stone from the beginning?

Awhile back I took a ChipCarving seminar with Wayne Barton.He would chip carve and about every 1/2 hr. Hone his knife on the fine ceramic stone for about 30 swipes.And that is what I do.I just use the 2 ceramic stones.I also sharpen with the blade flat.
