I'm full of questions but I'm getting there where ever there is.

Barton and others explain how to make your own designs, how to divide the circle into various segments - I can follow all that but there remains a problem . While this works fine on paper but with a plate , or a bowl the prescribed arcs invariably extend beyond the plate. How do others get a round this or must I draw the pattern on paper first?

Not even started carving yet, I have been looking for info for myself on chip carving and I came across this little tool. It is called the "Transfer Tool" and I found it on the following site. Wood Carvers Supply, Inc. Jeff

I sometimes will layout the pattern on a piece of tracing paper that is the same size as the area where I want the pattern to be and then tape that to the board. Because you can see thru the paper you can place it right where you want. I then lay that transfer paper between the tracing paper and the wood and trace over the pattern that is on the tracing paper and that should leave the pattern on the piece for carving. Good Luck!

Just a note to be careful of the sewing tracing paper, it is wax and smudges really easily. But, if you are careful it should work out.
