I did some relief carving on linden-wood plaques not larger than 12" x 8" and 1" deep. I read that almost all expert woodcarvers use a V-tool in order to outline the outer edges. Given the dimensions of my carvings, do you think that I should buy a V-tool 90 ° 5/8" or something smaller? So far I have a Flexcut blade 70° 1/4", but I am not happy with it. Any advise would be most appreciated. Thank you. Dino

I like to use a veiner to lower around the edges with. It leaves a rounded bottom edge that is easy to blend out to the lowered araea around the subject. I almost never use a V tool anymore except when defining the edge of a building or other square structure. Nothing in nature is square.

Thamk you for your answer. You're right, very few things are perfectly square. Greetings, Dino

Dino, Have you tried a Macaroni Gouge? I was looking at on at the Woodcraft store recently just for the purpose you stated. If you do a search on this forum you find other threads about them. Jane

Salve Dino, è un piacere trovare altri italiani su questo forum. Sai che ci sono forum analoghi anche da noi e diversi blog sull'intaglio e la scultura del legno? (just a greeting to another italian guy on this forum)

Macaroni gouge is a very versatile tool. You actually have three tools in one when you think about it. I also purchased a "v" tool in the 90 degrre shape. After buying it, I decided that I didn't really find it useful. Only you can decide if it works for you or not.
