Default outlining

Hello everyone, new here to this forum,I hve a quick question for the experts here,I am outlining a relief carving and there are alot of bends, corners etc. in the leaves im carving,no way to get into with my V-Tool, and I would like a nice crisp edge, tried my chip carving knife but couldnt get deep enough in one pass so it messed up the edge,am using Flexcut knifes and gouges, working in basswood, sharp tools, any advise would be appreciated, btw I do hve a dremel and hve tried several bits without too much success,I build furn for a hobby, relatively new to carving, thanks in advance

Use your gouges to make stop cuts. There is nothing wrong with having to take several passed to get to the depth that you want.

Your probably on the right track with using the knife. If you have a skew chisel, then you might try it, some times a skew chisel will get into places easier then a knife. (Sometimes it's the other way around.) If you can post a picture of the area that your working on that would help.

when I outline the project, I use a chip carving knife, assume it is the blade being thicker maybe, not sure, but it cuts it clean, and accurate, better than any other knife I have used.....I also take it down in steps, knife, gouge, knife, gouge....Dennis

Maybe you are trying to go too deep all at one time. You might also try a smaller V tool.

I have four different size chisels that I am working with, and my two smallest would have no problem getting into here. The smallest being a 2mm.

ok
english is my tird leanguage and i don`t know if i can explain this but i am going to try.
from the pictures i see that u are on the right track, but the v tool got no more us in there right now
.i understand that u got just 4 chisels ,and unfortunately those are not inaf .i had never used knifes just chisels, gouges and v-tools.now your next step is to use diferent sizes of gouges all around the outline cutting in aroun the edges ( not to much at the time) and then geting rid of the wood around the leafs, and then again until u reach the depth u want.usualy u need a few difrent sizes of gouges for this step. but u can try using what u got .if u take your time i am sure u will do just great
for a regular relief carving u need around25 to 30 chisels if u want your work to be realy easy.if u need more info just ask me
good luck
