Does anyone else think that lumping relief carving and chip carving together is odd? They are completely different animals. If flat plane carving is different from caricature carving, then relief carving is vastly different than chip carving. I vote for different topic headings for these two different carving media.

Yes, relief and chip carving are very different, but you will notice many postings do not fit the category in which they are posted.

I agree, chip carving is so different then relief carving. I wouldn't mind a different board for chip carving, and relief. I do love them both. but normally I just go to last post. so I can see all the post that I missed from the last time I was hear. but if I wont to remember a post I do go to the chip carving, or relief. so that would make it easyer, to narrow it down to one per kind. When I joined this forum in 2004 there were very few chip carvers on here and a lot less categories. Also, there were fewer categories back then. Perhaps chip and relief were together to save space. With all the chip carvers now, maybe its time for separation. IMHO Bill K. |

I haven't been a member long enough to weigh in heavily but I'd have to agree with separating the two...from my understanding, they are vastly different.

I just checked our category list and there are 27 of them. For those of us that have been on the forum for a while, this may be advantageous. As has been said, there are so many posts that drift off the thread, that when I am looking for specific information/postings, I use the search engine. If I were unfamiliar with the forum, and came upon all of these catergories, started to look through them, I would definitely be intimidated and probably reluctant to start posting. I am not opposed to adding categories. In fact, I would like to see animals and birds separated. I carve both; but, I also believe that about all they have in common is that carvers in this genre tend to do both. Let's make sure that we need another category before adding an additional one. To me, the main reason for dividing a category would be that the level of postings, on both topics, is such that it is becoming cumbersome. |
