Default Oak & Acorn Relief

I started working on this piece in early fall, and had it almost complete when I decided to lay in some Mahogany to work on over the holiday break. naturally the old project got put on the back burner in favor of the new project (pics and vids here Grapevine Relief Project

This is my first relief project, and I am very pleased with the results. It actually started as an experiment to see how a Red Oak board purchased at Home Depot would carve. I was looking for a more pedestrian source of wood; Alternative to Woodcraft and specialty lumber suppliers.

I was surprised how nicely it carved. It can be a little splitty with and against grain, but does nicely against and tangent. It's hard, so it's slower than Basswood, but in a way that is good for me because I am somewhat inexperienced. Also, I feel like I am using the Swiss steel to better advantage.

The panel is 7.5" X 24" and is finished with one coat each of BLO and Danish Oil.

You've done a fine job with that "big box" board, David. Nice clean work and a good design pattern.
