Thanks for the education. I've never had time to study him at length, but the ones I've seen, as an "old school" draftsman, have impressed me for his talent for optical illusion. I learn something new every day. What a great site!

Phil i agree the 1st Picture is Fantastic, but the painted one leaves something to be desired!!

Sappy: Thanks for the suggestion to put an antiquing finish over the colors to tone them down.
Davidwc: The "pattern" is a graphic design by M. C. Escher, the Dutch graphic artist. If you do a search of "Escher" you'll find many sites that feature his work. I scanned the image, resized it, and traced it onto the wood.

Phil, that is a great carving. I have always liked Escher's work, and your rendition of his design is superb. I also prefer the unpainted one, but the paint or not paint debate is one I have had with myself. Sometimes I win, sometimes I loose.
