Thanks Mike. I'll keep that in mind about Vesterheim's patterns. In the meantime, I'll be waiting for the book, and seeing what I can learn about Johan Amrud. I found this site dedicated to him:

http://home.c2i.net/frendall/showepage.htm

He passed away. There are some detailed photos of acanthuses on a handcarved buffet cabinet in progress and completed. Looks great!

Bad news...I got this e-mail from Blackwell on my order for the hardcover book of "Traditional Woodcarving in the Norwergian Tradition" by Johan Amrud, this morning:

We are sorry, however on this occasion our supplier has indicated that this
title is unavailable. At the time you placed your order we were unaware of this.

Unfortunately this means we have had to cancel your order. We will of course
remove the title from our site.

I guess somebody bought them out for that price and is selling them on E-bay for 70-100 dollars.

I have gotten very inspired to carve an ancanthus leaf.
This is beyond my abilities, but I can't learn unless I try, so off I go.
The Richard Butz "How to Carve Wood" book has a terrific pattern for a panel, and I thought I would try it in basswood..
First problem: my wood is only 1" thick instead of 2" thick.
so I'll improvise
Second problem: very complicated design....hard to follow
Third problem: I know I have to just keep carving for it to look like something
Fourth problem: It looks like a deep relief carving with a shallow relief carving on top of it.....carve deeper....
Fifth problem: AHHHHHHHH!
calm down....keep trying....
Comments from lackey looking over shoudler...."Is it supposed to look that flat?"
Not good.
Yet.
Determined.....back to it....
