Liferescue , I hope it is in English too.Smile
Your price of 38.20 doesn't say if that's in pounds, if it is then the price is more like $70.00 US plus shipping.
One other site I saw has it listed at about $88.00US ; http://www.opengroup.com/atbooks/820/8200419789.shtml
I would have thought the "Vesterheim school and museum in Iowa" would have stocked this book as they do have carving instruction classes there.
I see mdallensr says he has seen the book and seems to say at that price it's a good deal, on the other hand I was disappointed in the book, it is only 105 pages and it isn't what I would call an instructional carving book, yes there are some patterns and also some images of the different ways to use this type of carving also some history.
I bought mine around 1992 and paid quite a bit less than what is now the going price and consider it as a reference book on the use of acanthus style carving.
Hope my somewhat negative response to this book doesn't influence you and or anyone elses enjoyment of this book and when you receive it you are well satisfied with your purchase.

With my interest in sign carving, and my interest in the acanthus, I have been looking for Amrud's book for a while now. I have a copy of the WCI Summer 2003 Issue with Hans Sandom's article which I thought was great. According to Hans Sandom's bio with the article, he is a self-taught carver and that the designs of Johan Amrud influenced his work. Based on that, I wanted to see Amrud's book. When Mike said that the book was the one to have, I looked all that much harder for it.

Mike,
Thanks for the tip on the patterns. I'll look into that.

Thanks--I can understand how you feel. Some of these people really get out of hand with their prices. The book is cost is listed at $38.20 US or 21 UK. (Sorry I can't type the symbol for pounds, Euros or whatever) I don't have my printout of the receipt of the sale in front of me but I recall with S&H, it came to $44.56.
And 38.20 was the price listed on the US website. http://bookshop.blackwell.com/bobus/scripts/welcome.jsp
(Search by ISBN and enter 8200419789 in the search window)
If you go to the UK website, it will list the price as 21 after you enter the ISBN number in the search window. http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/bobu...ts/welcome.jsp
(Search by ISBN and enter 8200419789 in the search window)
I don't understand where someone gets off at charging $88 for a book unless it was from the original printing--and even could be a rip-off.
Bob

Just a thought, but if you are looking for patterns for acanthus, check some of the leathercraft sites. Acanthus patterns a used often in leather carving on saddles, belts, ladies purses and about anything else you can make out of leather. Hope you find what you need .Smile

Ah...that's better when I saw the Union Jack icon on the original url you posted I thought it was a UK web site and started calculating the currency rate for 38.20 pounds. Red Face
BTW the English pound symbol is Alt 412 although it hasn't worked in my browser (Mozilla) on this forum.
Anyway with the price more in line I don't think you will be disappointed with the book, as I said, I look at this book as a reference and not as a carving instructional book, yes there are some patterns although not as many as you might find in some books that "are" listed as pattern books such as say Susan Irish's Classic Carving Patterns book.
Good luck with your Acanthus carving

Thanks OG. From what I've seen and heard so far, I think the book will be what I have been looking for. AS for the patterns, I'll cross that bridge when I'm ready--soon as I finish my tools which should be soon. I just wish the green stuff would stop growing already--I'm spending more time cutting grass and shrubs than wood!!! LOL

The Vesterheim listed more than 100 patterns that they sell. They have everything from spoons to huge pieces of furniture. The carving group from that area does a lot of Norwegian style carving, including acanthus, and I've seen photos of their work in Chip Chats. I just started working on a mirror frame that may be from Amrud's work, and it was a photo tanke at their show.

Mike
Could you provide a link to the web page that lists these patterns? I went to their website, and I didn't see anything listed for patterns.
Thanks

Newgouger
I did check out what this "Acanthus" stuff was in Norwegian and it turns out to be the thing that "every wood carver" here are doing besides woodturning.
You could try to contact two of the biggest web book stores here in Norway and have them check out if there is any of theese books in English.
I do not know if they will ship to you but they should at least provide you with some titles/Isbn.
Most norwegians talk english
Contac us = Kontakt oss www.gnist.no (they can provide allmost any book that is "work related") www.bokkilden.no
Hope this will help

Bob: Vesterheim doesn't list the patterns on their website anymore. You should be able to get information from them by calling and asking for their museum store. I think(?) I got or bought a list of their patterns and matched them with some of Amrud's patterns from his book. I haven't tried to contact the carving group that's associated with that area, but I bet I could get some useful information if I did. Another item on my list of things to do....
