Default new to relief

Just wondering if anyone can give advise. I am going to be doing my first project. I have to do a dog (akita) head and am going to do it in relief so I can make a plaque for a door. I have never done anything like this and was wondering doing animals like a head of an animal what should I need to keep in mind. I have never done one so was just going to dive in and just do it. I thought I should look for some advise before doing so.
thanks
Tammy

If you haven't done any relief carving yet then I would suggest you do a youtube search for simple relief project/lessons and get warmed up on something similar than an akita's head. Good luck

Is it much different then doing a 3d head but instead of cutting it all the way off you have the flat surface background? here is a pin I did.

That Akita pin is a relief carving, so you have already done it once, you just need to do it agian. Nice pin by the way

Typically one would use gouges on a relieve carving , however on a very small relief with no background like the pin you made I don't see why you couldn't use knives.
