Tomorrow I'll start a whittling demo as part of our local History Days at the Kern Valley Museum. Here is the Celtic design I plan to use: I have already changed it by equalizing the two loops in the middle and crossing the strands that go to the heart at the bottom. DSC00994.jpg |

That should be a beauty! Lot's of detail, good curves, and repeating elements. What's the wood? Mike

I am sure people will enjoy watching all those "overs" and "unders" come to life. Good luck!

That's gorgeous! Is it your own design? I have a couple of my own in my Gallery. Please take a look and tell me what you think!

Hi friends, Here is a progress photo after the first day. The spoon is 3.5" x 12" - basswood. I have gotten all the knot crossings started, and the bowl scooped out. I have been using a knife, a #2-2 gouge, and an #8-7 gouge. Next I plan to bandsaw the thickness down to spoon contours. The Welsh griffon at the top will be done last. Thanks for your interest and encouragement. Day1.jpg Last edited by pallin; 05-16-2009 at 11:45 AM. Reason: Type corrections |

This is the love spoon after the second day of the demo. Some of the Celtic knot loops are pierced through and I have reshaped some to not be in one plane. A lot of time was spent talking to on-lookers. Day2 001.jpg |

This is the Welsh love spoon after the third and final day of the demo. I still have to shape the griffon at the top. I hollowed out the back so it's not too thick through the middle of the Celtic knot, which has a curved profile. Day3 003.jpg |
