Yes,,for outside,dowels or biscuts along the joint are needed,,even do it for interior stuff as well. Forget using basswood,,some use pine,,but the best is the cedar family of woods. Before you glue this wood up though,,using a waterproof glue of course,,you have to wipe it down first with acetone to get a proper bond..I made what was essentially a sign 10 ft long 4 ft high 6 inches thick out of red cedar and did it this way. But what most are using for signs these days,,because it's incredibly stable and you can get it in huge sheets,,is the high density foam board. It never moves,,takes paint very well,,and can carve it easily and sand it smooth.. beats using wood..comes in any thickness you want. You shouldn't really be concerned with costs,,you have to figure that in to the price before you give them the quote,,ultimately the customer is paying for it..so it doesn't matter what you are paying,,,I only hope you didn't give them a price before you priced out materials. Besides a sign only 3 1/2 x 2 ft or so is fairly small so the costs shouldn't be much to consider anyhow.

The sign is for a hunting plantation in Georgia and will be a lot of fun. I am planning on using my router for a large portion, which I have never done before! should be fun.

I also need to do letters, would love to router them but guess I will need to carve them as I don't have letter patterns.

Project will be fun to do.
