Here is a sunflower that I carved today to gain more experience in doing curved chips. By the way the board is turned sideways to reflect light better, so the stems to the flowers are actaully center of the board. This was a good experience in learning to read the grain. Some chips wanted to tear out really easy. I thought my wife would like it but her reply was, "show me the money, honey". How do you like that! It's nice but.......... I wonder if its because she works and I am unable to work so I get to carve? Surely my fellow woodcarvers will give me some encouragement and compliments if I cant get them from her. Haaaaa!! We have to stick together men/women carvers with encouraging each other. The board is 10 3/4 wide x 10 3/4 high. Basswood. Last edited by Stoney1964; 08-18-2009 at 09:42 PM. Reason: more info added |

Stoney, you're coming along really nice. The curved lines look pretty good to me. Good luck with the next piece.

Stoney, I give you credit for what you do. Man when I look at chip carving it scares me and looks way to complicated. I guess the scariest thing is it looks like it takes alot of thinking. I think your work looks good. Maybe your wife was just having a bad day, we all do you know. Wait till you are able to sell something, then you can show her the money. Hang in there and try to put yourself in her place. My wife is very supportive, but she doesn't carve so she doesn't understand my passion to do it. Safe Carving and God Bless, Mark |

Very nicely done, Stoney. The cuts are all nice and clean. Your wife might not understand your passion for carving or how difficult such a project is to do. Give her a hug and tell her how much you appreciate her. She'll come around. Ed

It's 100 times better than I could do. I wonder what your wifes comment would be if she saw one of my attempts at chip carving.

Ha! Funny comment Treewizard. Thanks guys for the encouragement. I actually finished this piece today and will probably put a pic on the website tomorrow for everyone to see. I think I learned a lot doing this little project so the next one should come out even better.

Gosh Stoney, I think it is just grand, your curves and chips are so clean. I am jealous. your right also. are partners are not always encouraging. seams like sometimes when we do, do something good, it is not about them, so they just blow us off. or put us down. that is one reason I come hear, to get good feed back, and a welcomed inspiration from others. also. some things on how to do better at what I am doing. constructive criticism is what we need, that always helps me do better. I love your chip carving. this piece is grand for sure. Evie

Stoney, Your chip carving is really nice. I tried a small chip carved flat ornament. I told everyone the dog chewed it was why it was so rough. First and last chip carving I tried! Wanda

Stoney, My first time on the message board.Your chip carving is cool. Teach your wife to carve-or learn to knit! Ha Ha. My first carvings were chip carving, in a class. I really enjoyed it. I now do mostly small stuff, santas, etc. I am looking for a pattern for a German Santa. He is a Saint with a Preist type hat. Anybody have suggestions? Hello to everyone. This should be fun Joyce Huso |

Stoney that looks great. I only wish I could do half as well as that. As far as ' show me the money' goes. I've done a lot of things that I enjoyed very much, and a lot of them never made me a dime. That carving looks a lot better than any dollar bill I've ever seen. Pete |
