Default I need some tips

Hi. I have some questions.
I am a beginner and would like some tips on relief carving
what wood should I use?
and whats Better basswood or butternut?
I have these available within 2 or 3 hours.
also any pattern suggestions
I Have the flexcut starter set as far as tools go

Either wood should do fine as long as the tools are sharp.

If you are going to apply paint or color washes to your finished relief, I would recommend basswood. If you want the wood grain to show, choose butternut. Both are nice to carve.

for starters, that flexcut set should serve you well....more will come as you advance.

I'd stick with basswood to start with as it has not much grain to deal with.

www.carvingworld.com has a lot of patterns and Susan is a good source of information.

www.stenmanstudios.com also has some nice patterns available. Fred and Elaine are good folks to deal with too.

Hi everybody! I've copied a pattern where the diferent layers are numbered from the highest to the lowest. Since it is my first relief attempt, what would you suggest me to do for a start? Should I start top-down or bottom-up? Is it advisable to let 2 mm. from one layer to the next? Do you have any other suggestion? thanlk you, for the reply.
