Could we have a close up? It's a bit too small to see what's what.

Ditto Carvity-Carve. I got up real close to the monitor and still couldn't make it out.

Red face Re: my first chip carving

I was able to zoom in on your picture by exporting it to a graphics program. Although it was fuzzy after being blown up, so I couldn't see any details, it looks like a woodspirit to me. Is this a chip-carved woodspirit? Hopefully that's not a dumb question; I haven't been carving long either.

Good news: Nice carving for a first attempt!!!
Not so good news: Don't think it would come under the category of chip carving. The rounded features and layers in the beard are not found in traditional or even free-form chip carving.
What kind of knife did you use?
Have you read any books on chip carving?

Check out examples by Wayne Barton.

Keep asking questions, keep carving and most of all carve what makes you happy!!!

Nope, that'd be relief, not chip carving. You use completely different tools for chip carving. Nice first relief, though. Keep at it.
