Default My Airedale!

This is my first relief of any consequence. I did a small dogwood flower in walnut to see what I thought of carving and found it enjoyable. So instead of doing something simple, I decided to try a relief of my dog Spencer. I know I have a long way to go, but please critique, and point out where I could have done better! The carving is mahogany and the only tools I have are a knife of my making, a flexcut #5 and a 2mm #11 Pfeil.

You picked a challenging subject for your second relief. And you did a nice job. I really like your background. It sets off the dog nicely. My suggestion would be to spend more time with rounding off the edges...for instance, the front of the ears still look square. I'm not a relief carver....so that's all the advice I can give. Looks like you are enjoying what you do. Keep it up.

EJ,
Looks good but Joy is correct, more roundness and a little bit deeper. I agree with the way you did the background.
Keep at it. I like the subject. Try a softer wood like Basswood.

You have a nice carving there NJNelson. I carve mostly faces but have never attempted an animal yet. Having more tools doesn't always make for a better carver so don't limit yourself with the selection you now possess. No words of wisdom to offer but to keep practicing. Refining will come as you learn. You picked a challenging subject so give yourself some kudos for a job well done.
