Default Minimal depth relief carving

Is it possible to create a carving like you would make a charcoal or pen & ink drawing using shading, position and slight curves to show the features with a small amount of real depth ? Something like the intaglio snowman in the holiday issue but with a lot more details and no color.
Saw a carving here a short while back of a canoe sitting at the edge of the water with trees and stuff in the background but can't find it again.
Can someone tell me where it is ?
Also have a deep carving in the works of a charcoal drawing I made about 15 years ago but waiting for nicer weather so I can get out to the unheated garage to do some of the roughing out before hand. Being new to carving I can see I have to prepare a lot of roughed out material during the Summer so I have things to amuse myself with during the Winter months.
