| | M. C. Escher Relief? Has anyone done, or seen, a relief of one of M. C. Escher's works? Here's an example of one of his posters, if you're not familiar with him. http://www.mcescher.com/Biography/lw439f14.jpg

| | Re: M. C. Escher Relief? Claude, I don't recall ever seeing any relief carvings based on Escher's work, but I did think they would be excellent patterns. As a matter of fact I did start collectng Escher images when ever I found them on the internet with the expressed thought of doing some relief myself, but I guess it's just something I never got aroundtoit.
I think the jpg images I have on the hard drive total around 600. .

| | Re: M. C. Escher Relief? The optical effects produced by Escher are dependant on imposing 3 dimensionally distorted perspective images on a 2 dimensionable medium. Although you may be able to achieve the look with pyrography, it would seem to be physically impossible to transfer those erronious 3 dimensional images into an actual 3 dimensional rendering. An interesting concept, however, and I'd sure like to see a succesfull one.

| | Re: M. C. Escher Relief? Ow! That makes my eyes hunt. My two cents is you'd have to do it in really low relief.

| | Re: M. C. Escher Relief? I realize this is an old thread, but it deserves an answer. It's been done - including "in the round." I had an exhibition last summer in Pennsylvania of 12 Escher-design reliefs I have done. See also: Impossible world

| | Re: M. C. Escher Relief? Phil, is the picture of your carving taken with a fish eye lens or is it actually carved the way I see it, if so, WOW, what a fine piece of art you have there, I find it really remarkable.

| | Re: M. C. Escher Relief? I'm sorry that I didn't see this thread earlier because I DO remember Phil's renditions of M.C. Escher and I'm a big fan of Phil's work.
To my eye it is really head-and-shoulders above the usual stuff people choose to take on in their woodcarving. It's certainly is in the class of things I strive for.
Three cheers to Phil on this and his Escher work!
It's unforgettable, Phil.

| | Re: M. C. Escher Relief? Thanks for your compliments. I really enjoy the challenge of carving Escher designs.
The piece thumbnailed in my earlier post above is based on Escher's "Balcony." I turned the blank in sycamore on a wood lathe to produce the bulge in the center. Then I carved the village scene - sort of a combination of chip carving and relief.
Thanks again for your interest.
