Just recently finished a low relief and woodburning started at a Fred and Elaine Stenman seminar last July......finished late 'cuz I got sick and had to finish this at home, picking my way through the instruction paphlet instead of first hand instructions. Stenmans are great instructors, and their written instructions are quite thorough, too. All except for the color schemes.....different companies have slightly different shades and it's interesting to try to match these hues from other sources. Anyway, I think it turned out reasonably well. It's posted over in the Carvers Galleries. Stenmans teach low relief accented with woodburning and enhanced with acrylic washes, letting the mild basswood grain show through. If you get a chance to take one of their seminars, I'd recomend it. You'll finish the project and have a darn good time doing it! Al |

Excellent carving. You managed the acrylic wash so well that it really looks like the light is coming from behind that scene. Thanks for showing it to us. Thor |

Thanks everyone. This was not only a fun project but a bit stressfull, too. I may work some of these techniques into that stupid train relief that has me so stymied. It's coming along, by the way, but will be sort of a mixed media piece before it's done because I'll probably have to incorporate some brass-work into the piping and rails, as they were just to small to carve into this really old brittle pine beam. Darn, looks like I'm the last one to see your wonderful work on this. I really like the warm feeling that you captured with the woodburning and acrylic wash. The woodgrain showing is another excellent addition. Kathy
