Default latest chip carving...

I wanted to do a name badge so I thought I'd add a little chip carving. The design was made up as I went.

'Tis a nice bit of chip carving! I especially like the type font. Did you make that up or is it published somewhere?

I am constantly amazed by chip carving.
I've never had a go at it but it facinates me. The symetry and clean cuts are so appealing. One of these days I may take the time to try and learn about it a bit but for now I am quite content to enjoy looking at other's work.

Nicely done, and yes, that Name turned out very well. Well, the whole piece is very nice!

I know chip carving comes easier to some than others. Some are just " lost" when they look at a design. I think a carver should look at one cut at a time. Make each cut sharp and deliberate. Worry about that one cut...make it the best you can. Then move on to the next cut...just one cut at a time. Before you know it ...it's finished.
As far as the lettering...I've messed with doing lettering since high school. I did layouts for a sign painter that he could not do in the summers. I even lettered grave markers after school. I was trained in " sign writing" by an old sign painter...taught to do it the old way. Hand lettering and pinstriping is a dieing art...now replaced by computer cut vinyl. So, it seems like I've had letters in my head for years. Some of it is bound to leak out from time to time.
