Mel I hope you will post your 'Sun Kachina' in this forum too. As for painting and finishing always a dilema for me I really think it's beautiful the way it shows now. I don't think I would paint this one, how about a nice oak stain and varnish. Or if you want to leave it natural color then how about Deft Danish Oil (neutral) then finish with varnish. Wonderful work!
Kathy | I liked that idea too, I read one of Susan's books where you apply BLO on it, and then apply wax. I like the idea of an oak stain, would it be an oil based stain or what type. Here's the other thread I posted for this carving.

Mel A Friends Insperation | I like oil stain Minwax makes an excellent stain (golden oak).

Hi All, still plugging away and I finally feel there is light at the end of the tunnel. All the Kachina Dolls are pretty much carved for shape and detail.
The background is still being checked and cleaned up along with the inside borders. I now have some sanding to do after I'm sure carved dolls are complete.
My hubby, had a suggestion about adding some windows in the stair-step design behind the dolls. Not to actually carve them in, but cut strips of wood to form a pubelo window. I'm thinking about his suggestion, may go a head and cut some windows and see how they look. Still undecided about using the sun design in that right hand top background area.
Next step will be to stain the whole panel probably golden oak oil, and then oil paint the dolls. Also, I still have to decide about incising a design into the frame.
Well, that's it for now, as always I appreciate your thoughts and comments.

Mel | Hi There, and thank you, I wish I would have thought to keep a time card on it. Or maybe not...LOL I hope you are right and I'll be proud of the panels when they are completed. I'm really glad I included your 'Sun Kachina' Doll as I think it really adds both interest and a different shape. Now, I have to just figure out how to paint it as you did. Is there a water to paint formula you use for diluting your paint? Or should I just experiement? Thanks again, Kathy

| | Re: Kachina Panels WIP Hey Doris, thank you, I feel I'm nearing a good place with this one. I do have some scrap basswood that I keep on hand just for testing paints and finishes. I'm used to painting my carvings full straigth color not diluted as MelNM paints his carvings. So will have to try some different dilutions. I do want to show his carving as he painted it. Or close anyway.
Thank you, for taking the time to comment I really appreciate your input.
Now off to see how your 'old woman' is coming along...I think you have an update.

Kathy | Hi Kathy
I think Terry had a neat idea, also it would help you to find the right window placement too. Personally I say go ahead and incise the design on the frame. Based on your drawing it would look great.

| | Re: Kachina Panels WIP Hi Mel I don't think I'm going to add the windows. I'm not convience it would enhance the composition. I am seriously thinking about incising the border design though. It will have to be done before I apply the pre-stain conditioner and stain. Susieq, thank you for following along it's been slow and my largest carving so far. There are two more panels to go yet, but smaller.
Ya'ah'eeh (Hello in Navajo), my Kachina Dolls are based on the Hopi, but I would guess they might use this word also. Not sure will have to research the word. As I understand it dolls can be shared between tribes.
Thanks you, for your interest.
Kathy
