Forrest | Thank you, Forrest I appreciate you taking the time to look and comment. How about I send you a link when it's finished with this panel--there are two smaller ones to follow.

Hi All, I bet you thought I'd given up! Well, not yet anyway...LOL
Making slow progress, but steady. The roughing out has proved to take the most time. Had I not included the frame it would have gone faster.
The Kachina Dolls are very close to their respective depth placement. I've even begain to carve on them a bit. It's hard not to want to just jump-in and start working on the dolls. But, I know first things first--the basic structure has to come first.
After I complete the carving detail of the dolls I've decided to paint them. My finishing plan is to seal the wood, use a 'Golden Oak' (oil) stain, then paint the dolls using oil paints. Then finish with a couple coats of varnish. Then start on the next two accompying panels.
The first image is to show a partical side-view for depth acheived. s welcome,

| | Re: Kachina Panels WIP Why did you make the one of the left , so much thinnner ? As it is the farthest back I am a bit surprized it looks to be about 1/4 thick .
But nice work so far .

| | Re: Kachina Panels WIP Hi Ash, the Butterfly Kachina is the first one on the left and rises up from the background approx. 1/8". I wanted that one the way I show it, for setback distance (depth). The small 'Sun Maiden' (looks like a flower) I will need to make it deeper.
Were you referring to the second one from the left? I need to take the cloud design down more yet.
As I'm feeling my way with this carving I'm always making adjustments. The background is carved down to 1" inch. I don't want to do any deeper so my adjustments have to be with the Kachina's and the background cloud design.

| | Re: Kachina Panels WIP Hi Susan & Sharon, thank you both for your nice comments. Susan the step design I thought would add interest and fill up the background. Originally I thought to make it a pueblo with windows, ladders, stairsteps. But decided to save that one for another project sometime. LOL
I do have another design element/object for the space in the far right hand area. I have it shown in my sketch, not sure yet whether I'll use it or not. I kind of like the balance it provides, what do you all think?
Thanks again,
Kathy

| | Re: Kachina Panels WIP yes, you mean the sun (?) right ?...yes, it provides more balance, as the right kachina is much less high...but, somehow, i like it better without,,,cant explain why... maybe is more focus on the kachinas... ah, such a big panel is quite some work, is it not ? and sure we want get it right with all this time spent. you are doing very fine :-) |

I look at the drawing and cover the sun symbol, and think it looks better without it....then after I take my thumb off the sun I like it too. Ahhhh what's a gal to do! Maybe I should do a WCI poll then others can help me make up my mind. LOL
Thanks you for your comments,
