Hey Buddy
You inspired me last night I drew up a Sun Maiden Kachina, need to attack it with the router tonight and hopefully start hacking at it tomorrow.

Hey Pal, will look forward to seeing that Sun Maiden Kachina, glad I inspired you! What size is your Sun Maiden?

UPDATE 05-07-08

Hi All, hogging out and basic levels nearing completion. Now is the time to set back and evaluate what I've done so far. I've indicated the various deepth levels by numbers with 6 being the deepest. I have to clean up my edges, snags etc. Then I can start to develop the Kachina features, clothing and background etc.
Deepth is about 3/4".
Comments and questions welcome.
Kathy

Hi Doris, thank you...I for got to mention about the dark spot. It didn't show up right away and doesn't show up on the backside. It's very hard, so maybe was the beginning of a knot? Not sure how I'm going to handle it. If I decide to paint then no problem. If I decide to stain only then it's going to be a sore eye (I think). What I might be able to do is make the color less noticable by lightening it a bit with paint. Just not sure yet...this was just one of those surprises that can happen when you work with mother nature's products. LOL

Hi Kathy
She's going to be 11"x8" wide, I started carving on her last night. The wood is only 3/4" thick so I won't be able to carve too deep.

Hi Pal, 3/4" depth should make for a nice relief carving. You should be able to get deep enough to show some shadow especially if you undercut the edges. Are you going to show a WIP or the completed Sun Maiden.

UPATE 05-08-08

Levels are in place, will review todays work later and see how it looks. It's been a process of adjustments so all comes together with depth in place. I numbered the levels if you saw the last update their were 6 levels. Now their are 8 (deepest) levels.
If I don't have to do any further depth adjustments, I can redraw the Kachina designs back on to them. Then I can start carvings the Kachina's and then paint. I'm leaning more and more toward at least painting the Kachina's.
As always I appreciate your comments and questions.

Yup! plan on doing a lot of undercutting. I'm not quite there yet though, my carving kind of looks like your as far as WIP. I'll post here when she's done, which looks like this weekend or sometime next week.

Looks like your coming along pretty well on your carving and pretty closed to doing the fun stuff.

hi kathy, you know probably i am usually a non-paint person when it comes to wood, but with the kachinas i really cant see them unpainted... but, i also recall your duck, where you were so unhappy after painting, it is a difficult decision. whatever you do, try make a small test piece first... as to the undercutting, it is very popular to do, since it does create shadows...but it weakens the edge. it is a lot work, to do it cleanly, and is it necessary ? no, usually not. why ? well, if you carve the object, here your dolls, well with good strong shapes, all is there the eye needs to see. you dont need a strong shadow around the doll to see it. if you still think you want get some more shadow, then you can leave at the boundary of the doll just 1mm or less wood standig up perpendicular to the bottom. this tiny ridge will create a shadow as does the undercutting, and the wood remains strong. when you look my bas reliefs closely you see no undercut (except the early leaf where i also still thought it is a must do), i not even made this tiny ridge, i just carve the object... of course, there are places where the object itself requires undercutting, but usually you simply dont need it...i know this is controversal point, but i want save you a lot of work, which in my eyes is not necessary, and only gives frustration when trying to get the undercut clean...you can try this ridge thingy while you carve, when you dont like it, you can simply round it over, and undercut if you like better...just food for thought...
