| | Re: Kachina Panels WIP Hi Kathy,
I've been meaning to post for a while but one that I did got lost. Anyway, what a great panel. I loved following the thread because I learn so much from the issues discussed.
Your will, determination and stamina is incredible and, as I've mentioned many times, I'm amazed at how quickly you completed such a complex project.
Thank you. |

| | Re: Kachina Panels WIP Hi Ash, nice to see you back....and thank you. I have two more smaller panels to complete. I started the 2nd one today, and have the background hogged out. I've started on roughing out the Kachina dolls for depth. These two should go a lot faster!
Thank you, for your interest and support,

KACHINA PANEL #2 BEGINS
2" X 10" X 13" BASSWOOD
Hi All:
Here is my progress so far, still pretty rough, but taking shape.
While carving with a chisel around the center Kachina head/feathers area my chisel slipped--took out the feathers.
After a few OK a lot of choice unlady like words I regain my composure. Checked my digits on my right hand--all were intact yep I was lucky. By the way had I not have been wearing a carving glove the tale might have been a both serious and costly.
OK after putting all a side for a while I had time to make a plan for replacing the feather's I lopped off. I cleaned off the area where the feather's had been. Now, the plan is to create new feather's using popcycle sticks. Which is what I used on the original Kachina doll. The viewers right ear will also have to be replaced too. This should work, just have to experiment a little to make them look like they were relief carved. Wish me luck!
Now the adventure begins again, and I hope you'll come back often and as always comments welcome.

| | Re: Kachina Panels WIP Hi Pal, yes it is a Corn Maiden and thank you. I forgot to mention about the orange tape around the frame. On the large panel I wish I would have thought to do this as it has saved the frame from nicks.
More updates in a few days.
Thanks again,
Kathy |

| | Re: Kachina Panels WIP whoops, sorry to hear about the slipping of the chisel, but glad you not cut yourself. but i am sure you can repair, and later noone will see :-) ... what kind of nicks should the orange tape prevent ? i put just white paper towels, like i use in kitchen, on parts of the carving which i have finished. this helps also to keep the carving clean, since now is sometimes hot, and hands sweat, no good on wood. thanks for sharing, is so fun to watch. what a big project :-) |

Took a nice nick out of the tip of my right thumb. Nothing a bandaide couldn't fix.....
The orange tape protects the frame from gouge, knife, power carver tool bumping and nicking. Like you mentioned also from hand oil and anything that might come in contact with it. Also while painting my large panel I got some oil paint on the out-side of the frame. Had I have had tape on the frame it wouldn't have happened. I like using the tape it doesn't slip around, and I too use a towel to cover my work after I'm finished for the day.
I have also started keeping my electric vaccum by my side while I work. It makes for a quick pick-up of wood chips from the work and floor.
Well, guess that about cover's it, thank you, for your interest and please keep coming back.
I'm such a fan of your work and enjoy everytime you post a new carving or WIP. You have so much to teach and me so much to learn.
Best to you,
Kathy
Oh by the way it's hot here too. I've been running the portable air-conditioner in shop so I can keep working in comfort. Our monsoon is working it's way up from Mexico and hopefully we'll get some good rains from it. |

| | Re: Kachina Panels WIP Hi Kathy is the orange tape electrical tape or what kind of tape is it?
As far as monsoon goes we sure have had a lot of thunder, but no monsoon. We could use a couple of drops of rain also.
Hey doing a Viking bottle stopper, need to carve some horns and paint it, then I'm done.
Can't wait to see this carving
