Are the letters incised or raised? They look incised, but I want to make sure.

Nice sign, and I really do like your style of relief carving. Maybe a bigger picture of the church scene, though.......maybe.

Thanks for the replies. The letters are carved into the wood. Is that what incised means? I'm just beginner so I don't know much of the terminology. My signs were bleeding through when I just stained my letters. So, I stain the whole sign instead and carve out the letters.

What a delight! I can see such improvement from the first church relief that you posted.

Yes, when you cut down it's called incising. Often this is done by laminating a thin layer of one color wood on top of another. In this case it would be a vener of walnut on top of the basswood. When you cut out the letters it reveals the basswood below!

Agree with the rest of the gang, your relief carving is getting better and better. The only way for that to happen is doing just what you are doing. Carve, Carve and Carve some more. Congratulations!
