Smile The joy of a nice piece of wood.

I was enjoying week-end carving on a beautiful piece of Butternut. The good Lord sure had carvers in mind when he created that wood. I haven't done much carving lately, being so busy with models, half models and such......so I deceided to cut loose on a nice stick of wood, instead of a scrap, and do a sea scene. That little schooner I carved from scraps, motivated me to do a proper piece and plan it out right. So I drew out what I envisioned on a 2" x 5" x 12" stick and started carving.

Damm.....but a good sharp tool is a pleasure to use! I was struggling with some shapes of the seas and finally dug around my tool chest and found a bent gouge I haven't used much and sharpened it up. What a wonderful feeling you get when a tool works well for you. That gouge cuts as slick as the Fonzie's hair! Cuts trough's in the sea, with the grain, against the grain, across the grain, .....all just as easy. No tear out, smooth, clean cuts......just a joy to use. Once you get into a rhythm of cuts, it's just a pleasure to carve, the wood just tells you: little deeper here, a slice more there, more undercut here....!

Looking forward to the detail work so I can use that set of micro carvers from Henry Taylor They are just a pleasure to handle. Makes me wish I had more full size gouges, to do a proper job. Ah....some day.

Bob

Be sure to show us a pic. when your finished. If it's anything like your other work there's no doubt it's a winner.
