jhdeck, I moved this to the chip carving forum so that you may get more direct help. I'll add a couple of old threads that "may" help... Transfer Patterns/letters... how do you transfer your pattern on to your wood? chip carving patterns Last edited by Mitchell; 02-01-2008 at 12:40 PM. |

Since you are a bowl turner, I would recommend trying a chip-carved plate. There are several designs in Wayne Barton's books. You can turn the blank on your lathe and, if it has an indexing head, divide the plate into equal segments. Below is a photo of one I did in sycamore wood, but I would suggest that you start with basswood. Note that you can shape the plate with a recessed center and raised ring before starting the carving. Here's another thread about free patterns....many of the links are NOT chip carving patterns, but I'm too lazy to go through them - but you may be able to find something that you can use. Free Patterns |

If you are willing to go with books you can get the basic cuts and various patterns in Wayne Barton's books. Let me know if you find any online tuturials or patterns, please.

There is this, that has previously been posted to the message board: http://2carve.com/chip.php#introduct...chip%20carving It's a good, basic, free online tutorial with a couple of patterns. It's enough to get started anyway. All the best, RussL. |

Hello jhdeck, Dennis Moor has a very good book out called "Chip Carver's Workbook" I would suggest that you get a compass, straight edge, .5mm pencil and just layout geometric designs to start with and practice how to hold the knife at the proper angle. The designs don't have to be much. Practice, practice, practice. Good luck!
