Default Jack In The Pulpit Two WIP

Hi All:

Jack In The Pulpit Two WIP
11" x 14"
Basswood

Seems all the things I'm working on these days are large and I needed something to work on at our club carvealongs. So I thought I'd do another relief carving using one I had already done as a model. Only real difference in the orintation to a verticle format. I have also incised a one inch border not pictured... May or may not paint this one....this may turn into a commission as I have someone who might like to buy it.

As always I appreciate your comments.

I think this is great! I was thinkinig how cool it would look 1/2 painted? Like...only the leaves or something. Great idea! Makes me take a second look at my lillies...

Hi Keoma, thank you....these flowers and their leaves are really fun to carve and to paint. I always start from the back and work forward whether I'm carving relief or painting relief. I'll have to check with the person who may want it whether they want it painted or left with a nice stain. Here is a link to the first one I did and painted if you would like to see it. http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.co...elieffinal.jpg

I love to relief carve flowers and really work the negative and positive spaces. Give it a try, the lilies will be popping before to long.

Our wild flowers are starting to bloom here in the high country of Arizona. As we have been blessed with some good rains and snow they should be really colorful and plentyful.

Garry, Kenny, Mark, Corey:
Thank you, ALL for taking the time to look and comment on my progress so far. This will be a slow one as I have other projects on the table too. I won't make you wait to long between postings.
Garry, no not just at club meetings, my Indian I'm working on is just to bulky to drag to meetings. I'm waiting for wood from Heinecke for a planned three panel relief project. Which will also be to big to drag to a meeting. LOL

Kathy it sounds fantastic what you are planing and I admire you for doing such a difficult piece,I too am waiting for the progress ,
I wish I could be this pedicular and start with drawing, it just does not work for me I have tried and of course my drawing is pathetic.
This board is just so great with all those inspirations from the different Artists I just wish I had better words to express myself to most posts.
Thanks for sharing
Alice

I agree with Keoma, consider trying a different approach with the painting...especially with this being similar to your other carving. I'm trying to get somewhere's in the middle where the carvings look natural even with some paint. That's why I typically use layers of a wash then add the linseed or some other oil. Might be something to think about. Either way, it will turn out just fine...like your other carvings.
