| | Irish Cultural Association sign Just completed a nice relief of a medalion of the Miramichi Chapter of the Irish Canadian Cultural Association of NB, to be placed in a delightful authentic old world Irish pub. The wood is Cherry, to match the tables, and is about 2" thick and about 15" diam. I finished it with multi layers of wipe on poly. I am quite happy with the results.

| | Re: Irish Cultural Association sign Nice work Bob! Should be real nice when you get the sign hung in th pub. Should be good for quite a few free drafts for you too!
I'm starting to get the itch to do some more letter carving!

| | Re: Irish Cultural Association sign Bob, your patience is amazing. It looks like you spelled it all correctly too. That would be my nightmare while working on a piece like that.
Did you have to do anything special to the cherry wood to carve it? I am caring two different pieces, and they are so hard, I'm using mineral oil to soften the wood first.

Verynicely done. The finish makes it that much more impressive. The folks down at the pub will be very proud as should you.
I like your work bench and tools, too. |

| | Re: Irish Cultural Association sign Thanks for the encouragement folks.
Thor .... nothing special on the wood, just lots of time and patience. I did use a mallet a lot, with the gouges.
Mel .... the letters were just traced from a set of stick on letters from Staples, and carved out. I stop cut them first, then power carved the background around them and finally went over it all with gouges and chizels. Cherry is very hard and I only broke three letters, and easily repaired them.
The shield is a larger version of the Associations metal medalion, just modified the lettering to suit their requirements, to highlight the local chapter.

| | Re: Irish Cultural Association sign Very nice Bob!! I liked the way you incorporated the sapwood edge to down the middle to give it just that much more separation between the two sides. Nice use of what you had at the time! It adds not detracts. Well done!
