This carving of H.M.S. Teazer, is based on the cover art work by Geoff Hunt, of Julian Stockwin's great book: "COMMAND". I had been working on it, off and on, for several years, and had set it aside. I had begun to carve rope around the outside edge, but it just didn't look right, so this week, I went at it in a frenzy, carving off the pathetic rope attempt and re-carved the entire piece, with much better luck. The wood is Basswood, and it started out as one of those store bought plaques. Very brittle, so much care had to be taken in the detail. I finally was able to get into all the tight places using a set of Two Cherries detail tools, that worked amaizingly. Once the carving was done, a bit of light sanding on the sails, no power, and I thought I'd try and burn some, just to see the effect. It turned out much better than I expected and totally different than without the burning. Makes the vessel jump out at you as the center of the action. The vessel is a British brig rigged, sloop of war, under plain sail, with a foreland in the distance. The class of vessel were very popular during the Napoleonic Wars.

Beautiful!! The contrast between the sails, sea and sky is great. If you told me the sails were mother-of -pearl inlay I would believe you. Bill K |

As I commented in the galleries about your ship. I total enjoy seeing all the cuts and your finish suits it prefect. Just a very neat carving. Forrest P.S. what size is this carving Bob?

Great job, Bob! I, too, really like the way you handled the sky. Along with the dark water it make the ship look like she's racing ahead of a storm. Bob

Glad you like it folks, thank you, I appreciate the encouragement. Forrest .... the plaque is 12" x 9" and about 3/4" thick. Bill .... no Mother of Pearl, just some sanding with really fine sandpaper. The contrasting texture with the sea and sky really make it stand out. Bob

That turned out really nice. I like that you have been working on it off and on and never gave up. It's great to finally get one finished that's been on the sidelines for awhile too, isn't it. The woodburning really added lots of great contrast.
