Default Green Man

I don't do much relief carving but thought I would try a green man. Not sure I did right by painting him but the basswood looked so plain. He's 5 1/2"x 8" from a 1" board. The pattern was modified from a Lora Irish one.

I would appreciate your comments and criticism so that I can improve on the next one.

I like him I also do very little relief carving but I did do a green man from Laura Irish's book. After seeing yours I think I will paint mine .It is a different pattern. Thanks for sharing I really like the way he is painted

Nice job on the carving and painting, Joe.

Just a thought, but you might consider a very thin wash of the green paint on the skin right next to the leaves - sort of a transition from the human (face) to the leaves. Probably no wider than the black part of the eye... But, before you mess up a perfectly good carving, take a piece of scrap, paint part flesh and part green and try the wash there first....

Great new skill Joe, Looks like he was chewing a little tobacco though. You just keep coming up with some great carvings.

JoeV,

That is a good looking green man. I keep thinking that I will try the one that Gary posted, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

Nice work!!! I do agree about the thin wash on the skin. Right now it looks likea person peering through vegetation.......a greenman (my interpretation) is a human emerging from the plant, so to speak.
Nice work and idea though....carver's are always open to a new way to do something.

Thanks Mark, thanks Brent for your comments. I'm not sure if the human is emerging from the plant or the plant is emerging from the human. Anyway I know what you mean. I considered painting him green from the start but I think the idea of a wash of green next to the foliage is better.
