Default Going to go a little bigger on this one.

Started a new carving last weekend, the wood is a piece of 200 year old chestnut from a log cabin. It is 2 feet long and about 10 inches wide. I have done some shaving on it and it should carve very nice. Trying for another Civil War Spirit...Knothole

Man! this is great. You're beginning to carve on a big chunk "O" wood, while I am starting on one that is 1 inch long x 3/4 inch thick. I would be at a loss as to where to start on a piece as large as you use. I know you will do that chunk "O" wood proud. Rebel or Yankee?? Tom H

That's a fine piece of wood. Should suck up the oil really nice having aged all those years. That size of wood is a standard for my carvings. Look forward to your progress.

Beautiful! You're going to stir lust and envy in our hearts with posting a picture of such a great piece of wood! I hope you're happy! Do it justice!
Several years ago I put a stone foundation on a 200 year old chestnut log cabin in West Virginia. A piece of wood like that is a treasure!

If you guys keep telling him how "sweet" this piece of wood is and he will be afraid to touch it.

Many of us have a perfect piece of wood; we are saving it for the special project that will probably never come along.

I have a thirty inch log of Yew wood I bought from a carvers widow.
She said he was afraid to cut into it; now I have the same problem, but I've only had it five years.

I also have two eight foot Yellow cedar logs about 24 inches in diameter that I have been saving for more than 10 years..... Someday.

Talking Thanks for all the responses on the Chestnut log...

Kinda slow getting started but I have started on it. I knew when my friend gave it to me it would be a special piece of wood. He actually gave me two pieces and said if I needed more to come back. He also gave me a piece of white cedar and said see what you can do with that, it is kind of knotty so we will see. Thanks again for the encouragement and thoughts on the log I will keep you posted on my progress....Knothole
