Default First Relief Carving in a Long time

The local club was doing reliefs so I thought I would give it a try. All of my stuff is done in the round. I may have to try this again. The flower is supposed to pink dogwood.

Very nicely done, Jim. It has a soft delicate look to it. I like the inner and outer backgrounds which create a natural looking framework around a lovely compostion. The darker, inner background colour gives a nice contrast to the image. Does the outer background slope down in toward the inner background?

I agree with Leslie. Very pretty and I like the stippled background gives it nice texture. You also did a nice job on the colour. It definitely looks like a pink dogwood. I really enjoyed the piece so I hope you do do this again. I would like to see more.

Blessings,

Hi Jim,
I like the carving very much, and the way it comes out of the frame is lovely.

The plain frame around it seems to open you up for an opportunity to carve the frame. Did you give any thought to that?

Very good color in the flowers.
Christina

Thanks for the replis, Leslie,Tina, Christina. I used both the dark stippling and the light, hard “squareness” of the frame to hopefully bring focus to the flowers and leaves. The outer, lighter background is flat. I couldn’t help adding a bit of whimsy to the composition by having a bit spill over the “frame” (it’s just the way I am). I added some other pics to show detail. The overall carving is 7 ¼” x 7 ¼” x 1”, basswood/linden with acrylic paint and Watco liquid wax finish, 70% light, 30% dark.

I will try again with a different subject. Thanks for the encouragement.

Jim
