Default First project

This is a pic of my first relief. I strated carving only about a week ago. The picture is a little grainy but its the only camera I own. I had a little problem with burrs while carving, but it was my fault for buying cheap tools. I will be ordering from Little Shavers tomorrow........

Hello Simplyme,

Welcome to the world of carving. From what I see, you're well on your way to doing some impressive work. Your design and proportions are really good.

Keep carving.

Hello and welcome to the WCI Message boards and the wonderful world of relief carving. I think you did just fine for your first relief carving. I think you made a good decision in choosing a simple non-complicated pattern. With each one you do you'll find will get better. It's practice, practice.
You can't go wrong ordering from LIttle Shavers they are super people and great to do business with and will always be there for you.
Now, what are you going to relief carve next? If I can be of any help please just ask.
Kathy

Thank you, for the nice compliment I very much appreciate it.
Southwest Mother & Child is one of my later reliefs. My first reliefs were much less complicated in design. In the beginning I used a lot of Susan Irishes patterns Woodcarving Patterns, Classic Carving Patterns Online, Wood Carving Designs & Patterns Online Susan is a regular contributor and author for this site. If you go to her web site you'll find some 'free' patterns which are great for beginning relief carvers. Susan is a great gal and always happy to help all levels of relief carvers and painters. She even has some 'free' patterns on this site...just do a search for threads by 'Irish'. Carving magazines is another good source for patterns, inspiration and idea's. Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine by subscription or from the Newstand/Bookstore is a wealth of information.

Very nice start to a very fun hobby. Maybe if I had started out carving relief, I could acomplish a nice one today. But I cannot! Your first piece shows skill way beyond what most first pieces show. Keep it a goin!

Thanks for sharing,

Tom H
