I just completed my first chip carving! Its by no means perfect, but I am very happy with it. Sorry for the glare on the picture, its somewhat hard to see!

Very nice for your first chip carving. The glare on your photo illustrates one of the challenges to applying a finish on chip carvings. Heavy varnishes (spar, marine, urethane) collect in the sharp cuts and diminish the precision of your original work. It's a real dilemma.

Congrats, MBarrett!
Save this carving (or at least the picture) and look back at it in a 6 months or a year from now. If you keep practicing you'll be amazed at the great progress you'll make.
You've got a great start!
Let me know if you need any guidance or have any questions.
I'm glad to help.

MBarrett, nicely executed chip carving! You might consider a lighter stain, with Satin poly finish. Not slamming you at all, you did well. With the lighter stain, the interplay between light and shadow would be more pronounced. Your cuts create the shadows. All in all, very nice job, congratulations!
