This is my first attempt at relief carving. It is a 21" geometric design with a nasturtium flower in the middle. It was inspired by a tile that I saw. It is nearing completion and I am cleaning it up and getting it ready for painting. It is nothing like the fantastic works I have seen here, but it is a first step and I am pleased with progress so far. Comments and help are, of course, welcome. I'm at the beginning of the learning curve here, so I appreciate any and all help. The tile had an art deco feel to it. Not sure If I got that here or not. I did put more detail and relief into the flower than the tile had. Anyway, I learned a lot doing it.

TOM You tackled a way of carving I do not believe I want to try. The lines are clean and like the way you have done the flower. Will be watching to see this done. Way Good Curt

That is an extremely good start! Nice clean lines, good design, and the background is nicely leveled. Thanks for posting that piece. Al |

When I first saw this I thought it was partly a reverse relief. It looks great. Are you adding color to it?

Curt, Archie, Kenny and Dave Thanks for the great comments. Kenny, I am going to add color. The border will be stained a rich red/brown stain that I had made up for some cabinets. The rest will be painted based on the colors of the tile that inspired it. I will post a picture of it.
