OK, the time to take up the challenge to try the human face has come, so I took this piece of walnut scrap and .......this is the result: 25X20 cm, finish with danish oil plus wax. I need your opinion and criticism Immagine 1.jpg

You have certainly "risen" to the challenge. The piece of walnut with bark on, sets off the figure nicely. It even looks like there is a woodspirit in the bark on the right.

Ahhhh, another one joins the ranks to take the challenge of carving the female face. First of all very nice carving. Definitely feminine lines in your carving - not mistake. Be happy with how you did. If I was trying to find things to give you feedback on....because you asked, I would try some soft curves in the neck to show some underlying musculature...given her posture of extending her neck. To bring out more femininity, try taking a little more off the chin so it lies back from the lower lip...something I get critiqued on with my females. And finally, you my wish to open the mouth a bit as the extending of the neck causes the jaw to drop a bit. I would see this feedback as consideration - not necessarily a critique, as I like your carving as it is. Good job on the hair. A lot of work went into your piece. Patrick |

| Very nicely done. I have not done a female face carving yet. Your carving inspires my to take a shoot at doing one.

I see how graceful your interpretation is. The hair is very well done. I would not have been able to give you advice on how to improve the next one, as it is just so complete as it is, but I do follow the advice from Patrick. Beautiful work. Christina |

Beautiful face. If I were to offer any criticism it would be to remove the line of cut from the front of the ear where it joins the face. The skin there is continous with the face and doesn't have a bump there. Also, the eye looks like it isn't set back in the bridge of the nose. If I were looking at her from the front in full-face it looks like there wouldn't be much of a depthening where the corner of the eye goes. There, after all of that, I do enjoy the carving. I have carved with Janet Denton several times and my female faces have improved greatly. She is the best femaly figure carver around....oh, and her sister!!! Sharon |
