This Einstein basrelief is in what it's said "3/4 position". I mean, it is neither in front nor in profile. Maybe there is another term in English to say "3/4 position". In my view, in profile" means a face where you see either the right or the left side. Having said that, where can I find a tutorial of face relief carved "in profile"? I need it because I would like to relief-carve a soldier with kepi as head-gear. As you know kepi has an sun visor, which should protrude (stick out) too much bot in the "3/4 position and in frontal face. |

Your looking to carve a silhouette carving basically. A simple way to do it is to get your pattern and do a simple numbering of the height. Set your highs and your lows. Determine your shadows and what you want to highlight. Everything will blend together from your highs to your lows except for your break lines. Hat line , hair line ear outline. Shadow points , ear lobe, below the eye. I set up a drawing to show what I mean. Since a face is round there will be very little undercutting to get highlights and few natural shadows, as your points of natural shadow are taken away because of the perspective. The 3/4 face gives additional depth that is lost on a silhouette. I hope this helps some. Ash |

Carving magazine issue #4 has an article by Ivan Whillock which demonstrates doing a carvng from a photograph. I am sure you can get a back issue. You may want to contact Chris Whillock about getting a copy. |

Go to google and google "Carving magazine". This is the site you want to go to. Either that Google Whillock Carver. This will get you to Chris or his dad's "Ivan's" site. I don't if you spelled Whillock wrong or if I did. If I did I am sorry about that.
