Default Escher's "Sun & Moon"

This is a relief design based on "Sun & Moon" by M.C.Escher. It is a tesselation of 28 birds, unique because the figures are not repeated. The original had a radiating sun superimposed over the light colored birds and a crescent moon & stars over the dark birds. Hence, the name.

I chose to leave off the sun & moon because the design was very busy. and more so when you put it in relief. In the carving, the dark birds stand out from the light birds at the top, and the light birds stand out from the dark ones at the bottom. So the plane of the birds cross in the middle. Note: a tesselation is a design in which the figures fill the space, i.e. no space between them, like jigsaw puzzle pieces.

Very nice, Phil. Did you inlay the darker wood, or use stain?

It's stained, Claude. The piece is all basswood, 15" x 16"
