Default eagle relief

This is the stylized eagle relief that I started in John Engler's class in Kerrville. I haven't put the final sealer and eye gloss on yet. My interpretation of the wing position is probably in error, but I have the feathers on the back fluffed and standing over the wing. This is a position I often see on my parrot. I did this before I saw Paul G.'s carving of this same pattern. So i will live with it.

I didn't outline the feathers in the lighter color. I found it too distracting and it showed up all my mistakes on feather placement . If you have a chance to take a class with John, you won't regret it.

BIG question::::: How do I frame this thing with all the uneven thicknesses on the side and bottom?????

Comments and criticisms are always appreciated. I can only improve if I know what I am doing wrong.

Joy

Beautiful work, Joy. I like it ALOT!

Why frame it? Put it up just like that!

Thank you, Mark. I don't usually frame my work, but this one seems to need "something". I thought maybe a frame would add to it....if I can figure out how to do it.

You could try something like a floater frame that is used for framing gallery wraps. If you Google "gallery wraps" or "floater frames" or just visit an art supply site like Dick Blix you will surely see what they look like. I make them for my photos that I print on canvas as gallery wraps. You might need to to do a bit of painting on the edges of your piece since you would probably want a bit of it rise above the surrounding frame. If you make your own frame, the paint/finish treatments are unlimited.

Marci, I'm glad you like it, thanks.

It is basswood, 12 x 16 x 1. It is painted with artists oils mixed with an oil based transparent glaze......a totally new experiment....that I don't recommend.

Just jump in feet first and in no time you will be relief carving. Have fun!
