The Complete Book of Woodcarving by Everett Ellenwood has a pierced relief project.

I love to relief carve and pierced is my favorite. I think I got hooked after reading a couple of books by William Schnute. He does phenomenal work. He layers most of his carvings, roughly cut to the shape he wants to end up with. It's nothing for some of his work to be 6" thick.

I had a commission to do some pierced carvings for a piano for the Baldwin Piano Company. I bought a DeWalt scroll saw to cut out the voids. After a few cuts I determined that it was too slow and cumbersome so I sold it and did all of the cutting out with a router. It took me a fraction of the time it would have taken with a scroll saw. A router also doesn't take up valuable floor space.

Here's a link to a page with photos of the pierced carvings. Scroll down to the Baldwin piano Co. carvings.
