Default What do you do with a pieace redwood burl?

You carve about 150 plus leaves on it.
My eyes will never be the same after carving them. the burl is about 4' sq.
was 4" thick. It's going to have a piece of 1/2" Glass cut about the same shape as the wood, then i need to make some kind of a base so i can make a coffee table, any suggestions would be helpful
Thanks,Stacey

OH! Be still my heart but that is just beyond words .........

I would think that a tree stump would be the perfect base as you have already carved the leaf canopy.

Superb work!

Stacey, My 2 cents worth! It's art! It's sculpture! To box it in with glass, so it can serve as a coffee table, would not present it as art/sculpture. Well that's just me, and my 2 cents worth. Kinda like putting those clear plastic seat covers over the new sofa. Something as spectactular as that needs to be seen just as it is. Tom H

Thanks, guy's! Susan, i hope that means
that you like it and not that you are having a heart attack (like the other post that i seen. ( I guess the over 50
crowd needs too get a check up )
buy the way Susan I would like to say thanks for all you do for us in the caving
world with your pattern's,books, etc.
they always jump start my brain!
I been thinking about gluing up a bunch
of red wood and try carving a stump
sounds like allot of fun too me.
Tom, I know how you feel, but thats what the client wanted so thats what
i made, as I have tryed in the past to
do the art thing, but I couldn't
find the market for it. So year's ago
I figured that if Iwanted to do what
Ilove too do, that I needed too find something that 99% of the people could
use, so I tryed doing doors and mantels
and had very good luck so far.
as an example, here is the same pattern
one as a door and one out of walnut
I sold two doors and still no takers
on the wall art.
P.S. Does that mean that I have too take the slip covers of?
Thanks again,Stacey

Stacey, the art carving is glorious! It reminds me of the carvings that were on the posts in the dining room in the Jurassic Park movie (#1). I loved those dinosaurs and how the carver made it look like the posts were carved out of the rock that held the fossils.

Beutiful work.

Susan

Stacey, I didn't realize the piece was a commission. I agree, that finding a usefull purpose for ones art is the key for sales. Doors, mantles, and other fine furniture are proof of that. Shoot, your door photo is enough proof. I just hate to see anything under glass. Well worked wood begs to be touched. That don't happen when under glass. But! the customers are always right. Arn't they? Thanks for sharing such a beautiful piece. Tom H

Colin posted a piece he called upside down http://woodcarvingillustrated.com/fo...ead.php?t=6303
What about a shorter, thicker version as a base? Or turn that idea upside down and flare the base enough to give it enough weight to be stable and have the arms support the top carved as branches .
I think you have done an exceptional job on it so far, good luck on finding the perfect base. Don
