this mill i have known all my life-- my grandfather grew up a few miles away and is now buried close by-- so i see it several times each yr as i decorate the graves there. this is the first relief i have done. it was done 4 yrs ago and its still my favorite piece. my instructor was John Engler and he has become a friend. the thing that i think makes it pop is the painting-- its water color and the process is also taught by john. the mill is located in ozark county in the ozark mountains of missouri-- i have since done several pieces like this ( same mill) and each looks as good and always sells well. when i have this at a show-- many will approach looking at it and then comment-- "we thought it was a painting" and it looks best when seen from 6 feet away.

It sounds like a great project. I have done several mill and they are all a challenge in their own way. Does this one have the exposed water wheel?

oddly enough this mill didnt have a typical water wheel-- it was powered by turbine below the porch seen on the side of the mill. the current owners have installed a wheel on the front side with a water pump because tourists expect a wheel. the mill still will operate and has a drive shaft and pulley and belt to drive the stone grist wheels. the water is diverted by a dam across the white river to this day-- i cannot imagine how the dam was built-- the white has lots of water in it-- cold water- even in times of drought

Interesting how these old mills are still around and some still operating. I imagine the white river was diverted so they could build the dam. Just a guess. That is how they used to do small rivers. But the white is a pretty big dab of water.
