Default creating chip carving patterns on a pC

I have read and heard of various programs for creating graphic images. Inkscape, Gimp. Adobe. Corel, etc

Can someone advise me on the preferred program if there is one for creating chip carving patterns. Not necessarily free form but geometric and lettering

I do my lettering with WORD if it is horizontal and COREL if I have to follow an arc or circle. I print the letters using the outline feature since I find it easier on the eyes.

1. Cruise around this good old internet and look at photographs of snowflakes.
A compass, ruler & protractor, replicate the pattern 6X, lots of inspiration.

2. Write to Lee Valley, Vancouver BC, they're on SW Marine Drive. On the wall behind the order desk is a framed panel, maybe 3" x 3" squares, 10 squares x 10 squares, every chip carving different. What a poster! Maybe they'd license the rights to print it from the carver, whoever that was. I don't do any chip carving but that's an outstanding example.
